Bath time can be a dangerous time for your aging adult. As her caregiver, you might want to go through the bathroom and determine what you can do to make the room safer on the whole.
Install Hand Rails throughout the Bathroom.
Hand rails on every available surface are an excellent way to help ensure that your elderly family member has someplace she can grab if she suddenly feels unstable. They can also help her to maneuver around the bathroom if she’s afraid she might fall. Hand rails also give you assistance when you need extra leverage to help your elderly family member.
Consider Modifying the Tub or Shower.
Modifying the tub or the shower with long-handled shower heads, grab bars, and other tools can help your senior so much. You might also want to consider modifying the entire tub or shower stall itself. Walk-in tubs take away the need for your elderly family member to step up and over the side of the tub, which can create a tripping hazard in and of itself.
Reconsider Some Bath Products.
Some bath products, such as bath oils and soaps that are oilier in nature, can be really difficult for your senior to use. This is especially a hazard when she’s rinsing off and the residue collects in the bottom of the tub or shower stall. Consider switching to products that are less slippery to give your elderly family member a better chance of reducing her risk of falling.
Install Non-Slip Rugs and Mats.
Non-slip rugs throughout the bathroom and in the shower stall or tub itself can keep your senior stable. Make sure that you get ones that are easy to pick up and clean when necessary but that attach securely to the floor when you need them to do so. Adhesive stickers can work well in the tub or shower stall.
Use Assistive Devices as Much as Possible.
Your senior may hate to use assistive devices, but they can make such a difference for her safety. Bath stools can help her to stay in the shower and get fully clean without having to worry about balancing. Other devices can help your senior to lower herself gently into the tub for a bath without having to worry about falling in the process.
If you need more help with your senior in the bathroom, senior care providers can help her to bathe safely. This is also an excellent option if your senior is nervous about having you in the bathroom with her.
